Dezeen Showroom: designer Domenico Orefice worked with Italian brand Ceramiche Keope to create this range of tiles that combines terracotta, contemporary aesthetics and Milanese architecture.

The CottoMilano porcelain stoneware tile collection is informed by Milan’s historic Fornace Curti kiln, a source for Lombard terracotta since the 15th century.

It honours the deep red hue of the furnace’s terracotta in its colour palette, as well as the culture of Milan in its unique decor designs, which can be mixed and matched with the standard tiles in the collection.

The decor tiles reference some of the city’s landmarks – such as the Ca’ Granda metro station and Santa Maria delle Grazie church – in an abstracted, simplified style on small, square tiles that give a distinctly contemporary aesthetic.

The complete CottoMilano range is made with new technologies that Ceramiche Keope says give the surfaces a tactile and chromatic softness previously unseen in ceramic tiles.

“Thanks to the synergy between Keope’s R&D team and the creative vision of Domenico Orefice, terracotta is no longer perceived as a material limited to rustic settings; it is reimagined as a contemporary, versatile and visually striking design option,” said Ceramiche Keope.
